In 1976, towns throughout the country celebrated the 200th anniversary of the United States' Declaration of Independence. Celebrations and commemorations varied from one city to another, as this event was recognized and celebrated. This website has an extensive history of the Bicentennial effort, both positive and negative. U.S. Bicentennial

In the yard in front of the El Reno Municipal Building is a gray granite time capsule, with a slanted face. The capsule was buried in celebration of the United States Bicentennial in 1976.

The inscription reads:

City of El Reno
Bicentennial Time Capsule
Buried August 8, 1976
To be opened year of 2076

"Here lies the present as we expect it,
