From the State Historic Preservation Office website:
Narrative Description: The John Kelly House, located in Midland, is a rectangular, two-story, hipped-roof, yellow-painted clapboard structure of Italianate inspiration with several attached wings. It features tall windows--some accented by pedimented caps--and ornamental bracketing under the eaves. Modern alterations to the exterior facade, including the replacement of the front entrance by a colonial one that is inappropriate for the Italianate structure, and the removal of an original wrap-around porch indicate a loss of integrity to the building.
Statement of Significance: The John Kelly House is significant as one of a relatively few Italianate houses surviving in Midland. The house was built for John H. Kelly, a Midland dry goods merchant, and for his wife Almira and their children, c. 1874. Kelly later served as Midland's postmaster from 1884 to 1886, and left the area for Grand Rapids by 1890. During the mid-1980s the owners were in the process of restoring the house.
