Edmond Public Schools officials on Tuesday released their revised COVID-19 protocols for the upcoming school year, with the district saying masks will not be required.

Although masks will not be required in school facilities, buildings or buses for students or staff, Edmond Public Schools officials encourage everyone to wear one to protect themselves and others. The decision to not require masks was made in accordance with state law.

Quarantines also are recommended but not required for individuals exposed to a positive COVID-19 case. District officials said fully vaccinated people do not need to quarantine if they are exposed, but anyone with symptoms needs to isolate until they can test or receive an alternate diagnosis.

Anyone with a positive COVID-19 test will be required to isolate regardless of vaccination status, officials said.

Families can still enroll their students in virtual learning, with Edmond Public Schools officials saying they must make their enrollment decisions by Aug. 25.

Edmond Public Schools also announced a testing hub that will open Aug. 9 at Cross Timbers Elementary School, 4800 N. Kelly Avenue. The urgent care clinic at Cross Timbers Elementary School will be available for students and family members to test for COVID-19, the flu and strep.

The center will replace the one located inside the district custodial building last year.

"As we look to the new school year, we are working to return to 'normal' with as few interruptions to learning and activities as possible," Superintendent Angela Grunewald said in a letter.

The first day of school for Edmond Public Schools is Thursday, Aug. 12. Click here for more information about the district's learning plan for the 2021-22 school year.
