The Midwinter Horn sculpture is located in the Nyenhuis Sculpture Garden on the campus of Hope College in Holland, Michigan. The aluminum and polyurethane enamel sculpture was created by William Mayer.
About William Mayer and Midwinter Horn:
Hope College Professor of Art Bill Mayer explained that the form of this sculpture was inspired by the practice in some Nordic countries of using sound waves from long horns to break up ice in frozen underground wells. Metaphorically the piece references the power of inspiration and revelation to transform people’s lives and society for the better. Midwinter Horn was originally commissioned for the campus of Christ Community Church in Spring Lake, Michigan. When Christ Community Church closed and relocated in 2009, the sculpture was donated to Hope College by alumni Richard and Margaret Kruizenga.
