The shield is formed by the arms of Castilla , León , Aragon , Navarra and Granada , the latter located at the tip. The shield appears flanked by the columns of Hercules , without crowns, and based on earth and with a single ribbon or ribbon intertwining and on which the legend " Plus Ultra " is written .

According to the Report given to the provisional government on the coat of arms and attributes of the coin in 1868, the Academy recommended to the Government a heraldic description:

"Shield quartered in a cross: first, of gules and a golden castle, crenellated with three battlements, and donjonado with three towers, the one in the middle greater; each one also with three battlements, all of gold, mazoned with saber and attached with azure; second, of silver and a lion of gules, crowned with gold, armed and decorated with the same; third, of gold and four sticks of gules; fourth, of gules and a gold chain placed in border, cross and in sotuer: pointed, of silver and a natural pomegranate showing its grains of gules, sustained, carved and leafed with two leaves of sinople. Lying down, one on each side, the two columns of Hercules, made of silver, with the base and the gold capital, bundled with a list of gules, loaded with the Gold Ultra Plus. "
