The Newfoundland Railway arrived here in 1883. The new community of Whitbourne was then known as Harbour Grace Junction. The earliest railway branch to Harbour Grace connected from here through Tilton. For most of the history of the Newfoundland Railway, trains later reached Harbour Grace via Brigus Junction.
By the late 1980s, the rails had been removed across all of Newfoundland. Soon after, rolling stock was put on display in Whitbourne: a snowplow, a NF210 locomotive, an express car, a passenger coach and this caboose.
