The small town of Insch is situated in the countryside of Aberdeenshire in north-east Scotland some 25 miles north-west of the city of Aberdeen.

The main cemetery in the town was in the old kirkyard of the parish church near the town centre, but this became overcrowded around the time that the church fell into disrepair. A new parish church was built in Western Road, and further along the road to the west, a new cemetery was opened.

The entrance to the cemetery is on the north side of the road, adjacent to part of the town's golf course. The rectangular site extends northwards and is laid out symmetrically.
