The Troll wall (Troldveggen) and the surrounding mountains in Romsdalen is a well-known area for climbing. At 1,000 metres, Troll Wall is Europe's tallest vertical, overhanging rock face and a very attractive site for climbers. Romsdalen attracts climbers from all over the world and an annual climbing festival is held.
In the latter part of the 1800s, most mountain peaks in Romsdalen were defeated by Norwegian or foreign climbers. From 1940, the focus was more on climbing famous routes instead of mountain peaks.
In 1965, the Troll Wall was climbed. It is a very difficult rock which is vertical and the last 50 meters are overhanging wall. Both a Norwegian and an English team climbed, but two different routes. The climb was followed with interest from the ground. After this, Troll Wall became an attractive place to climb.
