Buttercross
Erected in 1734 to shelter people
selling dairy produce. Replaced
pre-Conquest St Oswald's Cross.
Posthumous gift of Solomon Dupeer.
Tradition asserts that Solomon
Dupeer was responsible for
betraying Gibraltar to the
British in 1704. 18th century
benches survive.
Before the erection of this building the butter market was marked by a simple cross, a common practice before the 18th century.
Solomon Dupeer's wife and three daughters had contracted smallpox and he promised that if they survived he would leave money in his will to replace the cross with a covered area.
They did survive and his wife fulfilled his wishes and the shelter was erected in 1734 which at that time had a flat roof.
A memorial stone at the top of the south side of the building has the following inscription.
Erected by Mrs Elizabeth Dupier
relict of Solomon Dupeer, Gent,
in a cheerful and generous
compliance with his benevo
lent intention, AD 1734
