The Irish-Catholic in New Orleans worshiped with the French at St. Louis Cathedral until 1833, when they formed their own parish of St. Patrick in the American Sector. Charles B. and James H. Dakin were the original architects hired to design the Gothic Revival church. They began construction on the church, ran into problems with the foundation, and were replaced by James Gallier, who finished the church in 1841. The exterior was designed by the Dakins to imitate the ‘unrivaled example of splendor and majesty, York Minister Cathedral.’ Gallier mostly kept to the Dakins’ plan for the exterior, including the 190-foot tower, but removed some of the more ostentatious decor. The interior was Gallier’s design. Stained glass fills the panels of the sanctuary ceiling, spraying light down upon three oil paintings by Leon Pomarede.
