These obstacles started out as empty swimming pools common in America. In the beginning, these were mainly used in skateboarding to imitate waves. Similarly, large empty sewage pipes (full-pipe) were used for this purpose. After skateboarding came to prominence through movies and the like, several companies were established to build props from wood as well as concrete and steel to construct parks where these sports could be practiced without demolishing pools. Nowadays there is a skate facility in almost every town or village.
