"On December 16, 1943 at 17.12, the Lancaster DS835 departed from RAF-Witchford airbase with the mission: a bombing raid on Berlin. The aircraft was part of a formation of 483 Lancasters and 10 Mosquitos. DS835 crashed in Heemskerk for unknown reasons. All crew members were killed. Losses during this successful raid, which destroyed much of the city center of Berlin, were high. More than 50 Lancasters were lost due to attacks by German fighters, Flak anti-aircraft guns and the heavy clouds during the return flight."
