This is the fifth courthouse for Nemaha County. The first courthouse was built by the Seneca Town Company in Seneca in 1858. The county seat was moved to Seneca in 1861 and the courthouse burned in December. The second courthouse was a one story frame structure at Main Street and Castle Street erected by the Seneca Town Company in 1861. In 1872, the third courthouse was a brick structure was erected at a cost of $29,173. The courthouse burned on March 4, 1876. The fourth courthouse was constructed by James A McGonagle, of Leavenworth in 1877 at a cost of $20,138. The courthouse was remodeled in 1896 and was later demolished. This, the fifth and present courthouse was constructed in 1954 to 1955.
