"The Damascus Gate is an important gateway to the walls of Jerusalem around the Old City of Jerusalem. The current gate was built in 1542 by the Ottoman Sultan Suleiman I.

The original gate was probably built during the time of the Second Temple. The Romans built a new gate during Hadrian's time during the second century AD. In front of the old gate stood the Roman triumphal arch, thanks to which the gate got its Arabic name Gate of the Column. The column was never found, but it is possible to see the gate, which was found during the excavations for Mandate Palestine. It was the northern entrance gate to the city under the Crusaders.

The gate has two towers, each of which has an underlay. It is located on the edge of the Arab Bazaar and Market."
