This "Welcome to Downtown Franklin" sign is located on a grassy point of land where King Street meets East Central Street in Franklin, Massachusetts. The sign is suspended between two rough cut granite pillars. It is divided horizontally. The message is carved from the wood upper third and filled with gold paint against a solid green background. An oval panel shows a street scene of five buildings rendered in flat colors is centered at the top and above the lettering. The lower part is a metal framed message board whose glass door swings open from a top hinge. Inside, an oblong, full color sign promotes a Farmer's Market on the town common every Friday from June through October.
Located about 20 miles southwest from the City of Boston, Franklin is in the western part of Norfolk County in the eastern part of the state. It was officially incorporated in 1778, and, at the time, was to be named Exeter, but the residents chose to honor the statesman Benjamin Franklin instead. About 34,000 people live in the 27 square miles (70 square km) of its total area. It is home to America's first public library -- which began with a gift of 116 books from Ben Franklin, and Dean College, a small private institution with 1,100 students.
