At 14,411 ft. in elevation, Mt. Rainier is the highest peak in the state of Washington. It is also the most glaciated peak in the contiguous United States. The massive Nisqually Glacier is clearly visible winding down the side of the mountain from this vantage point. Mt. Rainier was established as a National Park in 1899, the fifth such park designated in the United States.

The postal card was part of a series of international rate stamps and stationery known as the Scenic American Landscape series. They began with some very familiar locations such as the Grand Canyon and Niagara Falls, but eventually included some rather unusual and remote vistas like 13-Mile Woods in northern New Hampshire. Besides this postal card, Mt. Rainier has appeared directly or indirectly on at least five or six other U.S. postage stamps.
