This bas-relief sculpture of Dante is along the outside wall of the Hammermill Library at Mercyhurst University in Erie, Pennsylvania. His likeness shares the wall with other greats of western civilization, including William Shakespeare, St. Thomas Aquinas, Michelangelo, and Mozart.

According to Encylopedia Britannica, Dante Alighieri was an Italian poet who lived who lived from 1265-1321. His most well-known work is the epic poem The Divine Comedy, and its three parts, Inferno, Purgatorio, and Paradiso. Britannica describes this work as, "a landmark in Italian literature and among the greatest works of all medieval European literature, [it] is a profound Christian vision of humankind’s temporal and eternal destiny."
