Frederic Edwin Church was a major figure in the Hudson River School of landscape painting. In 1869 he commissioned the architect Calvert Vaux to design a new home he called Olana. He moved into the Victorian style villa with Persian, and Moorish stylistic elements in 1872. In 1888 he created the studio wing and completed construction on this building 1891 and remained here until his death in 1900.

Using brick, wood, slate, and ceramic tile, the building is characterized by a fanciful collection of polychrome towers, chimneys, porches, and windows on a hilltop with a majestic views west overlooking the Hudson River.
