The statue De Sok was donated to the neighborhood by a number of former residents of the Sokkenbuurt. They were invited to the big party in 2001 where the 25th anniversary of the new Sokkenbuurt was celebrated.
The artist, Lex Quartel, knew Mrs van Laar personally. She lived in the old Sokkenbuurt and gave him a woolen sock she knitted herself. Lex cut holes in it to symbolize the old poverty. A cast was made of a foot wearing this sock. This was the basis for the statuette that the artist himself was allowed to unveil on October 5, 2002.
An image that reflects the appreciation by the residents for this neighborhood and in which a piece of history is also recorded.

Het beeld De Sok is geschonken aan de buurt door een aantal oud bewoners van de Sokkenbuurt. Ze waren uitgenodigd voor het grote feest in 2001 waarbij het 25 jarig bestaan van de nieuwe Sokkenbuurt werd gevierd.
De kunstenaar, Lex Quartel, kende mevrouw van Laar persoonlijk. Zij woonde in de oude Sokkenbuurt en gaf hem een door haar zelf gebreide wollen sok. Lex knipte er gaten in om de oude armoede te symboliseren. Van een voet met de deze sok aan, werd een afgietsel gemaakt. Dit was de basis voor het beeldje dat de kunstenaar zelf, op 5 oktober 2002, mocht onthullen.
Een beeld wat de waardering door de bewoners voor deze wijk weer geeft en waar tevens een stukje historie in is vastgelegd.
