De geschiedenis van Capelle aan den IJssel begint rond 1100, met een nederzetting op de noordoever van de IJssel. Het is onbekend wanneer de eerste kerk of kapel gebouwd is. De huidige Nederlands Hervormde Kerk of Dorpskerk is oorspronkelijk gebouwd begin 15e eeuw. Capelle aan den IJssel dankt haar naam aan deze “Cappel”.
In 1574 is de kerk door brand verwoest, ten tijden van de 80-jarige oorlog. De brand is vrijwel zeker ontstaan door de oorlog met de Spanjaarden, over het bezit van de IJsseldijk. Door verarming van de Capelse inwoners is pas na 18 jaar begonnen met de herbouw van de kerk. De herbouw was in 1594 klaar. In 1664-'65 zijn herstellingen uitgevoerd, uit hetzelfde jaar komt het koor.
In het schitterende interieur is onder meer de 17e eeuwse eikenhouten preekstoel en een Tien-Geboden-bord met omlijstingen en fronton uit 1656 te bewonderen. Het monumentale orgel is gebouwd door Van Dam.
De kerk heeft een lage en een hoge kansel. De hoge kansel (17e eeuws) staat staat tegen een koorhek en wordt alleen gebruikt als er geen toehoorders in het koor zitten. Deze is afkomstig van een kerk in Sirjansland. Deze kerk moest afgebroken worden na de stormvloed in 1953. Op de hoge kansel staat een zandloper. Deze werd ooit gebruikt om de lengte van de preek te bepalen.
De lage kansel is uit het einde van de 19e eeuw en is een Rooms-Katholiek kerkmeubel uit Frankrijk. Deze heeft een sierband met als opschrift “Consolatrice des Affiléges P.P.N.”. De eerste drie woorden betekenen “Troosteres der Bedroefden”. De bedoelde troosteres is Maria. P.P.N. betekent “Priez Pour Nous”, ofwel “Bid voor ons”.
In 1805 is de toren gesloopt vanwege instortingsgevaar. Twee jaar later (1807) werd de toren herbouwd, met bijna allemaal oude materialen. De originele luidklok stamt uit 1607. De kerktoren is als apart rijksmonument aangemerkt.
De laatste restauratie van de kerk kwam gereed in 1961.

Tijdens open monumentendag is de kerk geopend voor rondleidingen.

The history of Capelle aan den IJssel starts around 1100, with a settlement on the north bank of the IJssel. It is unknown when the first church or chapel was built. The current Dutch Reformed Church or Village Church was originally built in the early 15th century. Capelle aan den IJssel owes its name to this “Cappel”.
The church was destroyed by fire in 1574 during the 80-year war. The fire was almost certainly caused by the war with the Spaniards over the possession of the IJsseldijk. Due to impoverishment of the inhabitants of Capel, the rebuilding of the church only started after 18 years. The rebuilding was finished in 1594. Repairs were carried out in 1664-65, the choir is from the same year.
The beautiful interior includes the 17th century oak pulpit and a Ten Commandments plate with frames and pediment from 1656. The monumental organ was built by Van Dam.
The church has a low and a high pulpit. The high pulpit (17th century) stands against a choir screen and is only used when there are no audience in the choir. This comes from a church in Sirjansland. This church had to be demolished after the storm flood in 1953. On the high pulpit is an hourglass. It was once used to determine the length of the sermon.
The low pulpit is from the end of the 19th century and is a Roman Catholic church furniture from France. This has a decorative band with the inscription “Consolatrice des Affiléges P.P.N.”. The first three words mean "Comforter of the Sorrowful". The intended comforter is Mary. P.P.N. means “Priez Pour Nous”, or “Pray for us”.
The tower was demolished in 1805 due to the danger of collapse. Two years later (1807) the tower was rebuilt, with almost all old materials. The original bell dates from 1607. The church tower is classified as a separate national monument.
The last restoration of the church was completed in 1961.

The church is open for guided tours during Heritage Days.
