In 1845, a group of Lutheran ministers in Ohio established Wittenberg College primarily to train future clergy for the Lutheran Church. The first year saw one professor provide instruction to eight students. Today, there are over 1400 students enrolled in various liberal arts programs with over 150 faculty members. The postal card was issued on March 11: the same date the school’s charter was granted in 1845.

The building depicted on the stamp is the original building on campus. It has undergone numerous renovations over the years and is currently a residential hall. The school rededicated the building as Myers Hall in 1916 in honor of the Myers family who had funded a major renovation at that time.

On a couple of occasions, Myers Hall served as a hospital: once during the Civil War and again during World War I. With so many people dying under its roof, it’s no wonder that ghosts are said to roam freely through its hallways. But the most notable of these is not the ghost of a person but of a horse. It seems that a dying Civil War general requested to see his horse one last time. After leading the horse up five flights of stairs to the general, they couldn’t get him back down and had to put him down. Now the animal’s spirit can be heard shuffling around on the fifth floor or occasionally galloping up the hollow toward Myers Hall.

Among Wittenberg’s notable alumni are Isaac Kaufmann Funk (class of 1860) and Adam Willis Wagnalls (class of 1866). If these names sound familiar, it’s because their firm compiled and published the Funk & Wagnalls Standard Dictionary of the English Language.
