The fountain, designed by architect Erik Nobel on behalf of the city of Skjern and created by stonemason Charles Vendelbjerg, was inaugurated on July 4, 1996. In the center of the 6 m diameter fountain is a column made of red Swedish granite with a base area of 70 cm x 70 cm and a height of 4 m.
At the bottom of the well basin, a compass rose is worked into further red and black granite slabs, the cardinal points are with the first letters of the Danish directions (N for north, Ø for east, S for south and V for west) in about 8cm large letters in the black Carved in granite.
Elements made of a brass alloy (tombak) and corten steel represent the connection between society and the modern world (railways and technology). There are notches on two sides that symbolize the Skjern river - this is where the water also runs into the fountain basin.
