"In 1967, architect Arieh Elhanani, one of the designers of the Yad Vashem Memorial Hall, approached artist Buki Schwartz to present a design for a monument commemorating Jewish heroism. "We strive to be the last and final point of Yad Vashem's visit," Elhanani wrote. This instruction dictated the decision to place the monument at the highest point on the site so that the pillar of heroism could be seen from a distance. The memorial was inaugurated in March 1970, during the first international conference Prisoners of Camps and Jewish Nazi Fighters. In the center of the monument rises a 21 meter high column, which has three convex sides. It bears an inscription composed by Yehuda Leib Bialer, then a member of the Yad Vashem Council: road to Eretz Israel; and those who died, sanctifying God's name. “The square in front of the statue is surrounded by sculptural walls simulating rocks that reflect the Valley of the Shadow of Death."
