The 5 metre high Big Meat Ant was installed in 2011. Created by artist Amanda Feher, the brass, copper, and steel sculpture was part of a $250,000 project to attract tourists to Augathella.
Meat ants measure 6–12 mm and can be easily recognised by their dark-bluish body and red head. They are so named because if you leave a dead animal on their mound it will be reduced to just bones in a few weeks.
