The Captain Francis A. Hendry House is a National Register of Historic Places building built in 1914. Construction for it was started in 1913. Captain Hendry commissioned Benjamin F. Magill to supervise the construction. Magill being a self taught builder had assistance from his brother John H. Magill.

The house is a one and one-half story vernacular residence. Located at the west end of Fraser Street it is an imposing and prominent local landmark. It still retains its original architectural integrity. It is an excellent example of a simple but large vernacular home of its period.

After the completion of the house in early 1914, Captain Hendry, approximately 81 years old at the time, and his wife took up residence in the new home so they could spend their last years in LaBelle. Unfortunately Captain Hendry’s health was deteriorating and it appears they were only able to live in the home for a few months before relocating to Fort Myers. Upon Hendry’s death the home went through numerous owners.

It’s interesting to note that this house is the only surviving structure in Hendry County associated with the person for whom the county was named when it was formed in 1923.
