In the last year, our niece has discovered she has non-celiac gluten sensitivity and lactose intolerance, so it can sometimes be difficult to find restaurant offerings that will meet her needs on nights when we don't want to cook.
We were thrilled to find Asiana Bistro Teriyaki. It's a simple teriyaki joint like hundreds of others in the Puget Sound area, in a strip mall across from Whole Foods, but the food is reasonably priced and tasty -- and more importantly, most of the menu is gluten-free. Ever since the owner was diagnosed with celiac disease, she made it a personal quest to make sure the restaurant had truly gluten-free offerings. Look for a GF next to the name of the dish. For those wanting to avoid MSG, Asiana Bistro is also MSG-free.
Since the family who owns the restaurant is Korean, in addition to the usual teriyaki offerings, you will also find kalbi and bulgogi on the menu; all are gluten-free.
There are a few menu selections, such as yakisoba, tempura, chicken katsu and gyoza, that are NOT gluten-free, so choose accordingly.
We've eaten here several times since my niece was diagnosed. She can usually tell right away when a food advertised as "gluten-free" isn't -- she starts having stomach discomfort and joint pains, gets headaches, etc. She's never had any of these tell-tale signs of hidden gluten from anything she's ordered at Asiana Bistro. And the owner proudly told me that in the 12 years she's been here, no one has had a gluten reaction to her food.
