The Stan Hywet estate in Akron, former home of rubber magnate F. A. Seiberling and his wife Gertrude, is featured on this 2020 U.S. postage stamp celebrating American gardens.

In 1898, Frank A. Seiberling, along with his brother Charles W. Seiberling, founded the Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company in Akron OH. The company grew and prospered and, with the help of several key innovations such as a tire building machine, Goodyear became the largest tire manufacturing company in the world by 1916.
The success of Goodyear made wealthy men out of the Seiberling siblings both of whom set about building new homes commensurate with their newfound social status. Frank Seiberling’s new home was a 65-room Tudor Revival mansion set on 70 landscaped acres named Stan Hywet.
The gardens and general layout of the buildings and grounds were the work of noted Boston landscape architect Warren Manning. The landscaping included two tree allées on either side of the manor house, one consisting of London planetrees and the other of grey birch. It’s this latter allée that is portrayed on the stamp. The view is away from the mansion toward the tea houses overlooking the lagoon.
By the way, Stan Hywet is not some guy’s name but rather an Old English term which can be translated as stone quarry. The land purchased for the estate contained an old stone quarry, remnants of which can still be seen in the lagoon area.
