DE: Ende des 19. Jahrhunderts stellte die Kölner Verwaltung fest, dass der bis dahin genutzte zentrale Friedhof Melaten für die wachsende Bevölkerung nicht mehr ausreichen würde. Dementsprechend begann der Gartenbaudirektor Adolf Kowallek mit der Planung des Nordfriedhofes im Stadtteil Weidenpesch und des Südfriedhofes im Stadtteil Zollstock. Die Friedhofsanlage sollte Parkcharakter haben, damit die Anwohner den Friedhof auch für Spaziergänge nutzen könnten. Dies spiegelt sich in den geschwungenen Wegen im alten Teil des Friedhofes, die von den für Friedhöfe eher üblichen Schachbrettanordnungen abweicht.

Mit seiner ursprünglichen Größe von etwa 20ha wurde schnell klar, dass diese Fläche für die Toten nicht ausreichen würde. So musste Kriegsbedingt bereits 1916 die Fläche nach Süden um weitere 24ha erweitert werden, auf ihr befindet sich seit 1926 permanent der Ehrenfriedhof des Britischen Commonwealth sowie der italienische Ehrenfriedhof. Eine dritte Erweiterung um 14ha erfolgte Ende der 1930er Jahre und die letzte Erweiterung auf insgesamt 61,5ha erfolgte dann 1963. Damit ist der Friedhof flächenmäßig der größte in Köln. Auf dem Friedhof werden heute etwa 47.700 Gräber genutzt.

Auf dem Kölner Südfriedhof liegen einige bekanntere Persönlichkeiten aus verschiedenen Bereichen begraben, so findet sich hier die letzte Ruhestätte von Kirchenarchitekt Dominikus Böhm, der Gründerin der Arbeiterwohlfahrt Marie Juchacz, dem Boxer Peter Müller und weiteren. Zu erwähnen sei hier noch der Friedhof für die verstorbenen Kölner Obdachlosen, die hier seit 1997 in gespendeten Urnengräbern bestattet werden.

Der Haupteingang zum Friedhof befindet sich am Höninger Platz 25, der Friedhof kann im Sommer (Anfang April bis Ende September) von 7:00 Uhr bis 20:00 Uhr und im Winter von 8:00 Uhr bis 17:00 besucht werden.
