Marker Text:
Unlike a maze, a labyrinth is a single path that follows an intricate pattern leading from the beginning to the center and back. Labyrinths are used in a variety of traditions as places of meditative walking, relaxation, ceremony and reflection. Although labyrinths origins are lost in pre-history, through time people from both ancient and modern cultures have looked to the labyrinth as an archetypal symbol of journey and renewal.

Evidence of People's connection to labyrinths comes from around the world and many different faiths and cultures-from the Nazcan civilization in southwestern Peru, the Hop Indians of southwestern United States, the Lapps from the Baltic and White Seas, the Swedes and Finns, the peoples from all parts of the African continent, Siberian and Europeans. Some archaeologist and historians believe the first labyrinths were built around 4500 BCE with evidence of the labyrinth symbol dating back to much earlier times.

The Labyrinth at Brookgreen Gardens combines the ancient cross-cultural aspects of the labyrinth bringing together the traditions of people who have occupied this land including the Native Americans, the enslaved Africans, and the Europeans. the design is a seven circuit, medieval Chartres-style with a 76-foot diameter and measures 4/10 mile total in and out.

A reason to walk labyrinths today is to experience the connection of the past and present and our connection with and appreciation for the natural environment. There is no right or wrong way to walk a labyrinth. As with all journeys, it begins with the first step.
