The Basellandschaftliche Kantonalbank (BLKB) has set up 150 benches with historical information throughout the canton of Basel-Landschaft for its 150th anniversary. Each bank contains a different year and a sign with historical information about the place.

The text:

"Oberwil 1987.

When there is something to celebrate in Oberwil, it is usually on the "Ysweiher (ice pond)". An ice pond?
Oh yes. There, where the Birsig and Marchbach rivers meet, was a marshy area with a large pond. When the railroad came, it became profitable to extract ice from the pond in winter and deliver it to the city.
But it should not stop there: Ice was also good for skating. In 1889, the ice producer Xaver Feigenwinter set up a dressing room, and Oberwil had its winter attraction, visited from far and wide.
Today, the "Ysweiher" is a versatile and gladly used place. Not much more remains of ice than the name - except when it gets really cold. Then, to the delight of the youth, water is added.

(150 benches have been donated by the Basellandschaftliche Kantonalbank on the occasion of its 150th anniversary. All bear a year from the year of foundation 1864 until the year of the anniversary in 2014.)

Die Basellandschaftliche Kantonalbank (BLKB) hat zu ihren 150-jährigen Jubiläum 150 Sitzbänke mit historischen Informationen im ganzen Kanton Basel-Lanfdschaft aufstellen lassen. Jede Bank enthält eine andere Jahreszahl und ein Schild mit historischen Informationen über den Ort.

"Oberwil 1987

Wenn es in Oberwil etwas zu feiern gibt, dann meist auf dem "Ysweiher". Ein Eisweiher?
O ja. Dort, wo sich Birsig und Marchbach vereinen, war Sumpfgebiet mit einem grossen Weiher. Als die Bahn kam, wurde es lohnend, dem Weiher im Winter Eis abzugewinnen und in die Stadt zu liefern.
Aber dabei sollte es nicht bleiben: Eis war auch zum Schlittschuhlaufen gut. Der Eisproduzent Xaver Feigenwinter stellte 1889 ein Garderobenhäuschen auf, und Oberwil hatte seine von weit her besuchte Winter-Attraktion.
Der "Ysweiher" ist heute ein vielseitig und gern genutzter Platz. Von Eis ist nicht viel mehr geblieben als der Name - ausser wenn's mal wirklich kalt wird. Dann wird zur Freude der Jugend kräftig mit Wasser nachgeholfen.
