Tom Vandergriff is Arlington's longest serving mayor and personally recruited Major League Baseball to Arlington in 1972. He's also responsible for the opening of Arlington Stadium, the original home of the Texas Rangers. In 2004 Vandergriff was inducted into the Texas Rangers Baseball Hall of Fame. Under his leadership, the city's tourism industry and economy flourished with the arrival of the Texas Rangers, Six Flags Over Texas and General Motors.
