"De Grote of Sint-Michaëlskerk is een gotische hallenkerk in het Utrechtse stadje Oudewater.

De hallenkerk kwam in de 15de eeuw tot stand door de uitbreiding van een gotische kruiskerk, die op zijn beurt in de 13de eeuw een romaanse voorganger had vervangen. De drie beuken worden overdekt door houten tongewelven. De sacristie aan de zuidzijde van het koor dateert uit de 16e eeuw en wordt overdekt door ster- en netgewelven. De kerk is sinds 1572 of 1573 in protestantse handen.

De kerk heeft een 14de-eeuwse toren, de Stadstoren, met een gewolfd zadeldak — een in deze streken ongewoon type — dat bovendien haaks op de kerk staat. De toren had oorspronkelijk een verdedigende functie. In de voet bevindt zich een noord-zuiddoorgang."

The Grote or Sint-Michaëlskerk is a Gothic hall church in the Utrecht town of Oudewater.

The hall church was created in the 15th century by the extension of a Gothic cruciform church, which in turn had replaced a Romanesque predecessor in the 13th century. The three naves are covered by wooden barrel vaults. The sacristy on the south side of the choir dates from the 16th century and is covered by star and net vaults. The church has been in Protestant hands since 1572 or 1573.

The church has a 14th-century tower, the Stadstoren, with a dovetailed gable roof — a type that is unusual in these regions — which is also at right angles to the church. The tower originally had a defensive function. There is a north-south passage in the foot."
