This sculpture of St. Scholastica, depicted as kneeling but with her face raised towards heaven, is on the grounds of Holy Family Catholic Church in Nazareth. According to the plaque the statue was donated to the church by a family to honor some of those who have served Holy Family Parish.
St. Scholastica is the patron saint of Benedictine nuns, education, and convulsive children, and is invoked against storms and rain. She was born c. 480 and died on 10 February 543. She is generally portrayed as a Benedictine nun. It is said that while her brother Benedict was visiting, she sensed that her own death was near and asked him to stay. This would have been a violation of what is now known as the
Benedictine Rule, which would have prevented his staying with her through the night. Scholastica then prayed and a wild storm suddenly appeared, preventing him from departing and allowing them to continue their discussion. She passed away a few days later, and Benedict had her body laid in the tomb that he had prepared for himself. A sculpture of St. Benedict is nearby
