The Old Kent County Jail was constructed in 1894, and according to the nearby historical marker the usual inhabitants were "horse and cattle thieves, murderers [and] moonshiners." It was said to be one of the most difficult jails to escape in all of West Texas. The building still stands and is open; vandals have had their way with the interior.
