The plaque says, "John Joseph Huches, An Irish-born prelate of the Roman Catholic Church in the United States, lodged in this cabin. Hughes was employed as a gardener for the Mount St. Mary's College grounds and befriended Mother (St.) Elizabeth Ann Seton, who persuaded Fr. Dubois (President of the College) to consider his admission. Hughes was admitted in September 1820. Six year later, he became a priest and moved on to become the fourth bishop and first archbishop of the archdiocese of New York."
