A pair of hand-painted benches in front of the Annie Hubbard McEachern Public Library in St. Pauls, North Carolina, flank the blue entrance awning. The young reader themed seats feature The Cat in the Hat and a Bookworm. They are the work of Tino and Carole Ferro of Frog Pond Farm Studio and Folk Art Gallery.(1)
Both park benches have metal arms and legs and seat planks finished in black. Also made of metal, the backrests' designs are each cut along the the top of the characters to bring an added dimension to the pieces.
Stationed to the left/east is the Dr. Seuss-inspired motif. The top-hatted feline stretches out his arms among a row of books that fill the width of the bench. Situated to the right/west is a bright green bookworm with enormous eyes and bushy black eyebrows. The bibliomaniac invertebrate reads a big red book titled WORMS.
