"De Grote of Johannes de Doperkerk is een gotische pseudobasiliek met onvoltooide toren in het Utrechtse stadje Wijk bij Duurstede. Vroeger was hij gewijd aan Johannes de Doper. Om die reden wordt hij in de literatuur ook St. Jan Baptist Kerk, St. Janskerk of Sint-Janskerk genoemd. De kerk is een rijksmonument.

De bouw van de voorloper van de huidige kerk begon in de 14de eeuw. In 1366 verbond Gijsbert van Abcoude aan de aan Johannes de Doper gewijde kerk een kapittel van tien kanunniken en kreeg de kerk dus de status van kapittelkerk. De uitgebreide bezittingen van het kapittel leidden tot aanzienlijke inkomsten, en daardoor ook tot invloed van het kapittel. Onder bisschop David van Bourgondië werd de kerk vanaf 1486 aanzienlijk uitgebreid en werd begonnen met de bouw van de toren, naar voorbeeld van de Utrechtse Domtoren. Het middenschip van de hallenkerk werd verhoogd en de zijbeuken kregen lessenaarsdaken, zodat er een pseudobasiliek ontstond. Van de toren werd slechts één geleding voltooid. Het nieuwe koor brandde in 1579 af en werd niet meer herbouwd: de kerk heeft sindsdien een rechte oostwand.

Sinds 1580 is de kerk in protestantse handen. De kerk wordt gebruikt door de Hervormde Gemeente Wijk bij Duurstede en de Protestantse Gemeente Wijk bij Duurstede."

"The Grote or Johannes de Doperkerk is a Gothic pseudo-basilica with an unfinished tower in the Utrecht town of Wijk bij Duurstede. It used to be dedicated to John the Baptist. For this reason, it is also referred to in literature as St. Jan Baptist Church, St. Janskerk or St. John's Church, the church is a national monument.

The construction of the predecessor of the present church started in the 14th century. In 1366 Gijsbert van Abcoude attached a chapter of ten canons to the church dedicated to John the Baptist and the church thus received the status of collegiate church. The chapter's extensive possessions led to considerable revenues, and therefore to chapter influence. Under Bishop David of Burgundy, the church was expanded considerably from 1486 and construction of the tower was started, following the example of the Utrecht Dom Tower. The nave of the hall church was raised and the side aisles were given pent roofs, creating a pseudo basilica. Only one section of the tower was completed. The new choir burned down in 1579 and was never rebuilt: the church has had a straight east wall ever since.

The church has been in Protestant hands since 1580. The church is used by the Reformed Municipality of Wijk bij Duurstede and the Protestant Municipality of Wijk bij Duurstede."
