"This preserved equestrian statue represents Emperor Maximilian. By his marriage to Mary of Burgundy in 1477, he was also duke of Brabant. We see the chain of the Golden Fleece hanging around his neck. Through his marriage to Maria he had also become grand master of this important knighthood. That order experienced its greatest heyday during the reigns of Philip the Good, its founder, and of Charles the Bold, his son and successor, who was killed in 1477 near Nancy.
Maximilian had to deal with renegade knights, who sided with the French king. When Maximilian convened the chapter of the Golden Fleece in 's-Hertogenbosch in 1481, the apostates (Jehan de Neufchâtel, Philippe Pot, Jacques de Luxembourg and Philippe de Crevecoeur) were expelled from the order. Because Philippe de Crevecoeur had actually taken up arms against his lawful lord, the greatest shame befell him: his coat of arms was hung upside down over one of the gates of St. John's.
The chapter meeting was not the only occasion when Maximilian stayed within the walls of our city. Due to the ongoing Guelders wars, he was often in the Hertogstad. These visits would not be without consequence. Here he fathered an illegitimate daughter, Barbara Disquis, who lived in the Monastery of Saint Gertrude until her death, although her father Maximilian and her half-brother Philip the Good would have liked to see her married. The Barbaraplaats in the Gertru complex (corruption of Geertrui) takes its name from her.

This statue is one of those statues, which you can quickly miss on your trips in a city like Den Bosch. Many things to see and this statue is just outside the city center. It has a rich history (see above) and is situated in a nice area (newly renovated city walls, parking and entrance to the city center). Hope you enjoy it !
