" La tour du Cygne est un des témoins de la première enceinte communale de Tournai (XIIe siècle) qui encerclait la ville médiévale. L’enceinte sera abandonnée au profit de la seconde enceinte communale (XIIIe-XIVe siècles) et les anciens remparts seront réutilisés.

Son principal intérêt archéologique et militaire consiste en son plan de base quadrangulaire et en son élévation circulaire. Lors de l’aménagement de la première enceinte, les tours ont été construites selon un plan carré. Toutefois, ce système présentait des défauts militaires importants, tels que des angles morts assez conséquents empêchant une défense optimale de la tour et des remparts, si bien que la Ville décide d’améliorer ses tours en privilégiant un plan circulaire qui minimise les angles morts.

Cette transition militaire a été démontrée grâce aux fouilles archéologiques menées au Fort Rouge (rue Perdue) et à la tour des Dominicains (réduit des Dominicains).

Les deux parties bien distinctes de la tour du Cygne ont été construites dans le même matériau (pierre de Tournai) et présentent des percements d’époques différentes. La partie basse comprend une baie moderne, tandis que la partie haute conserve l’emplacement de ses créneaux ainsi que des consoles triangulaires qui servaient de support aux mantelets (volets en bois qui occultaient les créneaux)."

"The Swan Tower is one of the witnesses of the first municipal wall of Tournai (12th century) which surrounded the medieval town. The enclosure will be abandoned in favor of the second municipal enclosure (13th-14th centuries) and the old ramparts will be reused.

Its main archaeological and military interest consists of its quadrangular base plan and its circular elevation. During the construction of the first enclosure, the towers were built according to a square plan. However, this system had significant military flaws, such as fairly large blind spots preventing optimal defense of the tower and ramparts, so that the City decided to improve its towers by favoring a circular plan that minimized blind spots.

This military transition has been demonstrated thanks to archaeological excavations carried out at the Red Fort (rue Perdue) and at the Dominicans Tower (Dominicans reduced).

The two very distinct parts of the Swan Tower were built in the same material (Tournai stone) and have openings from different periods. The lower part includes a modern bay, while the upper part retains the location of its battlements as well as triangular consoles which served as a support for the mantelets (wooden shutters which obscured the battlements)."
