Howard Drew was Springfield, Massachusetts' greatest track athlete. He went on to join the US Army during World War I and later became a lawyer and a judge in Connecticut. In the 1950's, Howard Drew was an important figure in the civil rights movement in Springfield.
As a track athlete he was the first person to hold the title as the fastest human alive, in the 100 yard dash. He sustained an injury at the 1912 Olympic in Stockholm and had to drop out after the semi-final race. Interesting, the man he beat in the 100 meter Olympic Trials, Ralph Craig, went on to win a gold medal.
The mural wraps around the tower at Harrison and Dwight Streets. It depicts a five story high image of Howard Drew as a young man wearing a wearing a skimmer hat, jacket and tie and holding an American flag. Smaller images depict Drew as a sprinter at the starting line, World War I doughboy, and as a judge. The front and back of the medal he won at the 1905 Springfield Games is shown at the bottom of the mural.
