On October 26, 1893, Constable Hugh Hicks Siverd was escorting a man he had just arrested for bootlegging to jail. According to one source, as they passed this corner a friend of the prisoner shot and killed Constable Siverd. The two briefly escaped, but were soon recaptured and both were sentenced to life in prison.
At the time the spot where Siverd was killed was marked by a small metal plaque, said to be molded from the melted-down badges of his fellow officers. A small star on the sidewalk bearing the letter "S" marks that location today.
