The Cowley County Courthouse is on the south side of Highway 15 (East 9th Street) between Loomis and Fuller in Winfield. Across the street (to the north) is the old firehouse.

Back in the day there was a bitter rivalry between Winfield and Cresswell (now Ark City) for the honor of County Seat. The vote went to Winfield in 1870 and the first courthouse was completed in 1873. It was replaced by a much larger building in 1909. The current Modern building was constructed in 1961-2 and came into service in 1963. Some history on these courthouses can be found at the link below. There is a fine map of the county, the height of the building, on the north side of the courthouse.
