Former Cardinal Palace built by Richelieu in the 17th century. Royal Palace from 1643 to the Fronde. Constitutional Council: Montpensier wing built in 1817 and 1831 by Pierre Fontaine for Louis-Philippe, Duke of Orleans; decoration of the years 1830-1831 of Empire style. Council of State: 18th century Valois wing by Contant-d'Ivry; fitting out of Fontaine (1815, Hall of Trophies); handrail of the staircase made by the ironworker Corbin and the bronzier Caffieri; Litigation wing on the site of the old opera house, rebuilt by Prosper Chabrol after the fire of 1871; West wing completely redone after the fire of 1871: general assembly room decorated by Henri Martin from 1913 to 1926, neo-Gothic style chapel, Colonial room fitted out from 1858 to 1862 by Prince Napoleon. Ministry of Culture: 17th century wing of Lemercier, altered in the 18th century by Contant-d'Ivry and in the 19th century by Fontaine (Pavillon de Valois). Comédie Française: theater built by Victor Louis between 1786 and 1790; transformations by Pierre Fontaine in 1822; from 1860 to 1864, work by Prosper Chabrol (facade, grand staircase, foyer); after a fire in 1900, reconstruction by Julien Guadet.
