Ubicado en el extremo meridional de la comarca de la Sierra del Segura, limita con los municipios albaceteños de Yeste y Letur; con Huéscar y Puebla de Don Fadrique, en Granada; con Moratalla, en Murcia; y con Santiago-Pontones, en Jaén. Además, su término municipal es el más meridional de la provincia de Albacete y de toda Castilla-La Mancha.
Por carretera se encuentra a 156 km de Albacete, por Elche de la Sierra y Ayna, o a 189 km, por la ruta de la Venta del Olivo, algo más rápida que la anterior, al discurrir en buena medida por autovía. De la capital murciana dista 134 km.
En 2020 contaba con 1.178 habitantes según datos oficiales del INE. Cerca de la mitad viven en el casco; el resto se reparten entre las pedanías de Beg, Bojadillas, Cañadas (Las Cañás), Los Chorretites de Abajo, Cortijo del Herrero, Cortijo Nuevo, Fuente de la Carrasca, La Molata, Pedro Andrés y Yetas de Abajo.
La presencia de los grupos prehistóricos en estos parajes se confirma con unos documentos particularmente valiosos, más de una treintena de estaciones con arte rupestre prehistórico Levantino (10.000-6.500 años antes del presente), entre los que destaca el conjunto de Solana de las Covachas, con 200 representaciones de arqueros, mujeres y la clásica fauna de este arte (cabras, ciervos, toros y caballos).

Located at the southern end of the Sierra del Segura region, it borders the Albacete municipalities of Yeste and Letur; with Huéscar and Puebla de Don Fadrique, in Granada; with Moratalla, in Murcia; and with Santiago-Pontones, in Jaén. In addition, its municipal area is the southernmost in the province of Albacete and in all of Castilla-La Mancha.
By road, it is located 156 km from Albacete, through Elche de la Sierra and Ayna, or 189 km, along the Venta del Olivo route, somewhat faster than the previous one, as it runs largely on the highway. It is 134 km from the capital of Murcia.
In 2020 it had 1,178 inhabitants according to official data from the INE. About half live in the helmet; the rest are distributed among the districts of Beg, Bojadillas, Cañadas (Las Cañás), Los Chorretites de Abajo, Cortijo del Herrero, Cortijo Nuevo, Fuente de la Carrasca, La Molata, Pedro Andrés and Yetas de Abajo.
The presence of prehistoric groups in these places is confirmed by some particularly valuable documents, more than thirty stations with Levantine prehistoric rock art (10,000-6,500 years before the present), among which the Solana de las Covachas complex stands out, with 200 representations of archers, women and the classic fauna of this art (goats, deer, bulls and horses).
