From the plaque:
St. James Anglican Church, Wardsville
In 1845, the Reverend John Gunn was appointed by Bishop John Strachan, Diocese of Toronto, to be travelling missionary in the townships of zone Euphemia, Brooke, Ekfrid.
Land granted to William Gardiner by the Crown in 1833, was purchased by Dr. Abraham Francis in 1835 and given to the church of England in 1845.
Statistics for 1874 indicate a frame church. The Anglican population was 150. By the year 1844, St. James, Wardsville was listed as a brick church in excellent condition. With a church population of 200, and an average attendance of 85. A new parsonage [rectory] was built in 1883. Surrounded by attractive landscaping, during the ministry of Rev. W.J. Taylor, the church was declared free of debt and consecrated by Maurice Baldwin, Bishop of Huron, on May 28, 1884. By the beginning of WWI church members numbered 87.
During the depressions years of the 1930s, membership was down to about to 40 persons, and by the end of WWII to 15 persons.
A weekend foundation caused by adjacent road construction, made the church building unsafe and it was officially closed 31 December 1952. A victim also of population shifts and modern transportation.
This visible sign of an Anglican presence in Wardsville was removed after seventy five years of service to the community.
