Stephen Tyng Mather (July 4, 1867 to January 22, 1930) was an industrialist and conservationalist who became the first director of the National Park Service. Before his time as the director of the NPS, he was a millionaire owner of a Borax company. During that time, he felt there should be an over arching organization to oversee the National Park administration in 1916. In 1917, he was appointed and lead the NPS until 1929 during which he set the foundation for years to come.
The Monument is a large stone with a plaque that depicts Mather with tress and mountains in the background above the text:
He laid the foundation of the National Park Service. Defining and establishing the policies under which its areas shall be developed and conserved unimpaired for future generations. There will never come an end to the good that he has done.
Note: this plaque is one of many placed at all the sites named after Stephen Tyng Mather.
