DE: In dem recht unscheinbaren Haus in der Bahnhofstraße 1 in Brühl wuchs der am 13. April 1906 geborene spätere Blutgruppenforscher Professor Peter Dahr als Sohn von Bäckermeister Josef Dahr und seiner Frau Klara auf. Vorgesehen war, dass Peter die Bäckerei im Erdgeschoss übernehmen sollte. Nach dem Ende des ersten Weltkrieges stand aber fest, dass die Bäckerei nicht weiter bestehen konnte. Peter besuchte daher das Gymnasium in Brühl und wandte sich dann dem Studium der Chemie zu. Im weiteren Verlauf reifte der Entschluss praktizierender Arzt zu werden, den er dann mit dem Staatsexamen 1930 und Promotion zum Doktor 1931 abschließen konnte.
Mit dem Blut und seinen Eigenschaften beschäftigte er sich aber erst nach 1935. Im Laufe seiner Forschungsarbeiten am Hygieneinstitut der Universität Köln entdeckte er die Untergruppen A1 und A2 der Blutgruppe A. In Zusammenarbeit mit Prof. Karl Landsteiner, der das erste Blutgruppensystem bereits 1901 aufgestellt hatte, fand er im Zusammenhang mit der Neugeborenen-Erythroblastose den Rhesusfaktor. In dieser Zeit wurden von Peter Dahr auch die bis in 1980er als Standardwerke zur Blutgruppenbestimmung und die Vorgehensweisen zur Transfusion von Blut geltenden Artikel geschrieben.
Nach dem zweiten Weltkrieg erweiterte sich die Forschung im Bensberger Institut zur Blutgruppenbestimmung auch Richtung Forensik, in der Folge konnte der erste Vaterschaftstest aufgrund der Blutgruppen fertig entwickelt werden.
1954 wurde Prof. Dahr dann Mitbegründer der "Deutschen Gesellschaft für Bluttransfusion", die den Aufbau von Blutbanken in Deutschland zum Ziel hatte. Zahlreiche Ehrungen für seine Arbeit, ohne die die moderne Medizin in dieser Form nicht möglich wäre, und die Aufnahme in die Bundesärztekammer folgten in den 1960er Jahren.
Die 1980 an ihn herangetragene Ehrenbürgerschaft der Stadt Brühl lehnte er aus formalen Gründen ab, 1981 wurde dann aber eine Bronzetafel an seinem Geburtshaus angebracht. Am 28. Februar 1984 verstarb der Forscher im ALter von 78 Jahren in seinem Haus in Bensberg.

EN: The later blood group researcher Professor Peter Dahr, born on April 13th, 1906, grew up as the son of master baker Josef Dahr and his wife Klara in the rather inconspicuous house at Bahnhofstrasse 1 in Brühl. It was planned that Peter should take over the bakery on the first floor. After the end of the First World War, however, it was clear that the bakery could no longer exist. Peter therefore attended grammar school in Brühl and then turned to studying chemistry. In the further course the decision to become a practicing doctor matured, which he was able to complete with the state examination in 1930 and doctorate in 1931.
He only dealt with blood and its properties after 1935. In the course of his research work at the Hygiene Institute of the University of Cologne, he discovered the subgroups A1 and A2 of blood group A. In collaboration with Prof. Karl Landsteiner, who already had the first blood group system established in 1901, he found the Rhesus factor in connection with newborn erythroblastosis. During this time, Peter Dahr wrote the articles that were considered standard works on blood group determination and the procedures for transfusing blood until the 1980s.
After the Second World War, research in the Bensberg institute for blood group determination expanded in the direction of forensics, as a result of which the first paternity test based on blood groups was fully developed.
In 1954, Prof. Dahr became a co-founder of the "German Society for Blood Transfusion", which had the aim of building up blood banks in Germany. Numerous honors for his work, without which modern medicine would not be possible in this form, and admission to the German Medical Association followed in the 1960s.
He refused the honorary citizenship of the city of Brühl, which he had been asked to do in 1980, for formal reasons, but in 1981 a bronze plaque was attached to the house where he was born. The researcher died on February 28, 1984 at the age of 78 in his house in Bensberg.
