The first grist mill in the village of Poland, Ohio was built in 1801 at Yellow Creek. At this site today, South Main Street (Rt. 170) crosses the creek, and there is a park where one can visit the site of the former mill. A plaque at the site states, "Built in 1801 by Jonathan Fowler, Poland's first settler, the first grist (flour) mill was a log structure located in the center of Yellow Creek, reached by a foot bridge. It was replaced by a large frame structure which stood on this site's hillside until 1920. Mill foundation stones are visible at the top of the hillside adjacent to the bridge." The plaque is accompanied by a photograph of the larger mill referenced on the sign.
