Eglise Saint-Pierre-aux-Liens

L'église Saint-Pierre est un édifice intéressant, assez hétérogène, dont la construction paraît s'échelonner du XVème à la fin du XVIIIème siècle. Dans l'état actuel, la nef de cinq travées, flanquées en 1781 de collatéraux sensiblement de mêmes dimensions, rappelle les anciennes églises-halles.

La base de la tour (pierre de Tournai) jusqu'à la baie du premier étage date du XVème siècle. Il s'agit d'une des dernières traces de l'influence du gothique tournaisien (scaldien). Le rest de la tour est en grès verdâtre et porte, en son sommet, un ancrage marquant 1643, date d'une importante restauration.

A l'intérieur, le maître-autel est une transition entre retable à portique et retable lambris. Il est couronné d'une statue de saint Pierre sous un dais à lambrequins. Deux reliquaires baroques en forme de coffret en bois massif contiennent les reliques des saints Pierre et Hermès. Le panneau central comporte l'ancien retable de l'église gothique, consistant en une peinture sur bois. Celle-ci représentela Crucifixion, tandis que dans le fond se distingue le Portement de la Croix, à gauche, et la Mise au Tombeau, à droite. L'inspiration est celle d'un épigone qui a rassemblé des réminiscences forts diverses. Ce tableau est attribué à un peintre ellezellois du début du XVIème siècle, Jehan Du Trasnoit. Le sarcophage d'autel Louis XVI tardif ets orné d'un médaillon avec buste en relief de saint Pierre.

The Saint-Pierre church is an interesting building, quite heterogeneous, the construction of which seems to extend from the 15th to the end of the 18th century. In its current state, the nave of five bays, flanked in 1781 by side aisles of roughly the same dimensions, recalls the old hall churches.

The base of the tower (Tournai stone) up to the bay on the first floor dates from the 15th century. This is one of the last traces of the influence of Tournaisian Gothic (Scaldian). The rest of the tower is in greenish sandstone and bears, at its top, an anchor marking 1643, the date of a major restoration.

Inside, the high altar is a transition between a portico altarpiece and a paneled altarpiece. It is crowned with a statue of Saint Peter under a canopy with lambrequins. Two baroque reliquaries in the form of a solid wood box contain the relics of Saints Peter and Hermes. The central panel features the old altarpiece of the Gothic church, consisting of a painting on wood. This represents the Crucifixion, while in the background stands out the Carrying of the Cross, on the left, and the Entombment, on the right. The inspiration is that of an epigone who brought together very diverse reminiscences. This painting is attributed to a painter from the beginning of the 16th century, Jehan Du Trasnoit. The late Louis XVI altar sarcophagus is decorated with a medallion with a relief bust of Saint Peter.
