On 25 March 1634, was the first Catholic Mass in English America. Catholic leaders left England and Europe due to the turmoil and persecution of Catholics. Lord Baltimore, Cecil Calvert instructed settlers to treat others fairly. In 1649 the Maryland General Assembly made this an official policy: The "Act Concerning Religion."

St. Clement's Island
To this island in March, 1634. Governor Leonard Calvert
and the first Maryland colonist came in vessels Ark
and Dove. Here they took possession of the province
of Maryland. Erected a cross of Maryland wood and
celebrated the holy sacrifice. Here they first brought
to the new world those principles of religious liberty
which have been the chief glory of this state.
